Hey Rube

Page added: Winter 2006

In November 2000, HST took up the pen once more and began writing a column for ESPN's Page 2 section called "Hey Rube!". The column was often about sports, but sometimes about politics. Subtitled "Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and the Downward Spiral of Dumbness--Modern History from the Sports Desk", Hey Rube, it was released on August 3, 2004 from Simon & Schuster. As the subtitle implies, the column wasn't always about sports - it was through Hey Rube that readers found out about Lisl Auman. Perhaps the most infamous Hey Rube moment was in May 2004 with a column titled "Let's Go to the Olympics". In it, HST found the Abu Ghraib scandal more shocking than the "foulest atrocities of Adolf Hitler". The paragraph was later edited to be non-offensive.

The columns can still be read on ESPN's site, but the archive link is dead. I have a list of most of them here.
